James, Bit tricky to know for sure what's happened. My best guess is that it a wheel bearing failure and not a disc problem. I base this on the noise and the disc going up and down - most disc related failures result in left/right wobble. With bearing failures, the noise will vary upon load i.e. it will be noisier around a corner in one direction, and sometimes even no noise at all around the other way. You could jack it up, leave the wheel on and see if there is any play in the bearing - best done by grabbing hold of the wheel at 10 and 2 and rock it through the centre. If you've never been shown how to do this, it's likely you haven't got a clue as to what I'm talking about though.
Front wheel bearing are best replaced in pairs, around $30 a set for a 1600 and .75-1 hour labour a side to replace if you don't do it yourself. At a rough guess you wouldn't have a lot of change (if any) out of $150 at a garage. Last time I had to get something done at a garage I think labour was $60/hr, but it probably has gone up since then. regards Terry -----Original Message----- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]]On Behalf Of james wade Sent: Saturday, 17 August 2002 7:11 PM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: discs Hey Guys. Last night, I was driving down a main road not too fast (at the speed limit give or take 10 ks) and I noticed a screechy sound above the stereo while I was accelerating. I turned the stereo down and it was definitely coming from my car. As I took my foot off the gas the sound stayed and got worse as I braked. About 500M from home the noise stopped, for no reason, and I drove home thinking the problem had gone. I drove to work this morning no problems (I had the window open to make sure there was NO noise) and then maybe 2-3ks from home the noise started again but didnt stop. I took the wheel off and the disc looks as if its been buckled like a bicycle wheel it goes up and down a bit. Its a stock (I think) solid 1600 disc what could be the problems here? How much ($$$) am I looking at? Im trying to look at ALL possible options to fix this, so if you have any ideas please dont hesitate to suggest something. I have limited funds too, so yeah im trying to keep the costs to a minimum. Cheers guys. -James --membersozdat------------------------------------------------------- OZDAT Mailing List Please Note:- Send (un)subscribe requests to [EMAIL PROTECTED] Send submissions to [EMAIL PROTECTED] No unauthorised redistribution of this email http://www.ozdat.com/ozdatonline/index.htm http://www.ozdat.com/ozdatonline/listindex.html http://www.mail-archive.com/[email protected]/ ---------------------------------------------------------------------
