Craig,

The factory L18W SOHC engine bore was 3.5" less 40' so with a L18 crank the capacity was 1889cc, and that translates into 87.8xxxmm - 88.9mm bore. Arthur Jackson (Sydney Datto engine guru) built replicas of these and also a 2.1 version that used a different crank (probably L20B). Prices in late 70's early 80's were $5K - $8K+ for the 1.9 and $12-14K+ for the 2.1 both with either A87/V912 head. If you were really serious and wanted a FIA head add a lot (as in heaps more) for a very reliable extremely powerful for it's day L Datto dirt engine to go get those Gallants and Pescorts with.

The 1.9 was for the weekend PRC enthusiast (Peter Sayers won his championship in SA with this engine, see his car on the Ozdat members pages), the 2.1 was for the extremely serious dudes (the Greg Carr's and Ross Dunkerton's of the time) as it produced in excess of 200hp reliably and was theoretically redlined at 8000 rpm which meant the rally cars of the day were geared to peak at ~190 kph. I watched the German WRC on TV today, and those cars were pulling 240 kph plus.

The L18W engines that we ran were only good for 7200 rpm and geared for 105 mph (170kph) and I thought that was pretty scary at times - times change, and thankfully safety certainly has changed, in the German WRC two dudes walked out of their rally car which has basically exploded and caught fire.

regards
Terry

Subject: How Much?

Hey list, how much is the biggest anyone has bored the L18 'W' block out to? I'm not sure who it was but one of you guys was talking about a factory rally motor based on the L18, that was out to 1900cc?.  This week the machining starts, so please reply ASAP.

        Cheers in advance Craig
