g/box cross member

Listers,   any one able to whisper the right combo to get the Stanza 5sp into the early 1600's?   Im trying to bolt the x-member up and she aint want to go no matter which way around it is.  Ive been told by a mate who did the same thing (L20 SSS 5sp) that two holes lined and he drilled the other two and put plates on the inside of the car, but buggered if i can get one pair of holes lined up!   Ive got the std L16 x-member and another one that is pretty chunky, not sure where its from,   This same combo bolted up to the last 1600 that this motor was in but it doesnt want to fit!!   Please help!
