Sounds right Andrew,
                                I looked at one 1600 once and it had a fuel
smell problem. It was coming out of the fuel feed/return lines connecting to
the tank. Look under the  car for wet spots. Try there, or check those tank
breather tubes incase you have a cracked hose/ t-piece.
                             If it`s really bad i wouldn`t drive it until
you fix it, incase it catches FIRE!
