1mm or so is normal as the shaft spins on a cushion of pressurised oil
rather than a ball-bearing, so it needs to have a little bit of play when
it's dry.

If it has no play then I would not buy it as it would probably be coked up
with carbon. Telltale sign is sticky black goo in the exhaust housing, or if
left too long it will be hard crystal like black stuff.
