Rob, Yeah the flap valve you mention sounds like the throttle body. The AFM on this system is a separate item to that further upstream, and has a trapdoor flap inside it-the ECU simply measures how far the flap swings open to determine the airflow the engine ingests. The black box is the throttle position switch simply has a couple of switches inside telling the ECU when at idle, and when the throttle is open relatively widely. With some wiring diags from the net, the system is not too tricky to decipher, and worth a look for a simple alternative to a carby fed street car.
