ActiveRecord will stay a default ORM, but it does not mean Sequel and DM will be "second class" citizens. There are people on this "merged core team" who do not use ActiveRecord, and they are likely to scratch this itch ;) I want to stress again, nobody wants Rails 3.0 to be a "giant code slam". Like Python 3.0 wasn't "the Big Rewrite": instead there is 2.6 and 2.7 in works that are closer to 3.0. Even Rails 2.3 will have first fruits of Merb hackers work in, and I personally hope 2.4, 2.5 and so forth will follow.
