How much does the guy want for it?  It sounds like a simple vacuum control 
valve (VCV) adjustment could be needed.  Every once in a while, someone 
selling an MB diesel with a tranny problem thinks it's something serious, 
but it not.  You may get lucky, especially if it's faster than your '84.
