Russ,

Do you have a 71 250? That was my first Mercedes. I bought it about
12 years ago. I loved that car, it is why I still drive a Mercedes.
Mine was Red -I mean real blood red. I bought it from a guy who had
spent $7000 restoring it. I know you are thinking $7000 on a 71 250?
Why would anyone do that? I don't think he intended to spend that much
money things kept snowballing on him. At any rate, I bought it for
$2500. It was a beautiful car -White interior. Many of the later run
71's had the 280 engine in them. Mine did. 2 carbs - that were murder
to get exactly right. I had that car for four years (a very long time
for me) when someone rear-ended me and totaled the car. I bought it
back from the insurance company replaced the rear bumper and taillights
and tried to weld a few other things together. It still wasn't right,
but I had a hard time letting this car go. I sold it to a friend of
mine who drove it for two years, then he sold it to a mutual friend of
ours. This guy was driving it on the highway when the oil pump
obliterated itself (this is all speculation) and he lost all oil
pressure and crashed the engine. The old car had 428,000 miles on it.
He replaced the engine with a fuel injected GM350 from a late model
Oldsmobile station wagon. It's a sin to do that to this car, but at
least its faster.
