On my 82 300sd I had a squeaky (turkey call) sound coming from the steering column when I turned in 1 direction.Dielectric grease on the horn contacts under steering wheel stopped it. I don't think you are to do it if you have an airbag.
Track rod bearing mounts on my car made more of a clunk(over a bump) that came from in front of the floorboard. I did first hear them when turning. Russ H.
