At least in the late 70s early 80s, here in Canada, they were the predecessor to the pit bull and the rottie in terms of display/security dog, also choice for punks and criminals looking for street cred. Amusingly, both the Dobie and the Rottie have now become sort of the image dog of choice for Hot Single Urban Females, the sort who dress and act in such a manner that they need four-legged backup.
