Fewer power drain things attached to the engine. Nothing other than
the alternator and water pump going on Gump. The 616 cars probably had
automatics, which rob some power, power steering and AC suck more.
Maybe the location of the oil filter and having the oil bath air filter
increases mileage?

My first MB was a '70 220D, and I got almost exactly the same mileage
that Clay is getting.
