As much as I am a "Question Authority" sort of individual, I must side with the Navy on this one. All these two young pilots would have had to do was call up their base ops on the radio and "request permission to divert" for a SAR effort. It probably would have been granted. Happens all the time, but you must let those responsible for assigning airframes know where you are and what you are doing.
