Most will recommend that you block the EGR off permanently. A thin metal plate where the EGR valve is mounted works wonders. A functioning EGR WILL clog up the intake manifold and build up carbon around the intake valves. Did you check chain stretch? Your chain could be bad enough to be retarding timing of both valves and fuel injection. The result would be loss of power and smoke!
