Sales of the 944 (83-89) saved the company, plain and simple. Their words. 
What finally killed them was the 50K price and still four cylinders. Even 
though 
the 944 Turbo was a 150+mph car.

As to the 928, it was launched as an SL competitor which never went anyplace.
