A tip for new welders doing this type of repair. Cut your metal big enough to 
make any bends you need, then tack it in place. The metal will bend much more 
easily now than it would before because its HOT from being tacked in place. Not 
hot enough to bend easily? Tack it some more... I've gotten pretty good at 
stitching sheetmetal into place, tack, bend, tack, bend, tack, bend...
