They can be intermittent for a year or longer, then finally just refuse to turn. Two options are to pound on the starter via a length of wood and a hammer, or using one of the manual starter switches (sold for turning the engine while you're adjusting valves, etc.) that clamp onto the solenoid terminals to see what's happening.
