I wouldn't do that. First you have to get at least the outside surface 
really smooth or it will scratch the seal and bushing on the way in.
Second if the weld breaks, and the chances are real good for that 
happening, the pieces will take out the front pump and very likely ruin 
the whole front cover that is the front pump body. To my mind not worth 
the trouble or money involved.

I dunno, I think I'd give it a shot, just tack welds mind you, hit it
  once or twice and give it time to cool off...
