You simply got lucky. Joking aside, as an electronics tech (30 years ago), first thing I jump on in troubleshooting a problem when lots of interrelated electrical things don't work is the ground, or lack thereof. Systems such as the cluster normally share a common ground -- and if there isn't ground, it is going to work as advertised.
