Yup - the next morning the paper had a story about the seasonal lake turn-over that happens every fall. Top 2-4 inches of water get cooled at night enough to fall to the bottom, displacing the algae filled (from a nice long summer of warmth and sun) bottom water which rises.
However, the more nutrients, the more algae the water can support.
