35mm can shoot great high resolution photos. Shoot ASA400 film with a small lens and you get the "crappy 35mm images" mentioned in the previous post. Shoot with a professional quality lens with plenty of light gathering ability and everything changes.
All depends on lens quality, film quality and a good understanding of your media.
