Actually, it was a venture between Fiat and Ferrari following the partial buyout after the Ford purchase died. Ferrari made more than 12s though -- he ran a large 4 cylinder F1 car in the 50s as well as 6s and 8s.

The Dino 246 was well rec'd but not as fasst as its arch-rival the 911 so plans were made to drop in a 8 cylinder. Never happened though - would've been interesting! But as far as i know it never happened -

Yeah, I knew that story, I think the 6 cyl engine "disqualified" it from being a "Ferrari" so it was always called a Dino, after the son who died. I don't remember why it had the 6, maybe to be a cheaper more affordable version maybe? It does not look like other Ferraris, a bit more exaggerated styling I think, but it is a neat looking car in something other than pea green. At the Larz Anderson museum shows I recall seeing red, yellow, and I think a brown one back when.

Hey Rich -

The Dino and 246 are same - they all had V6s - the Dino was originally all 6 cylinders engines named for Enzo's son who died early - around 26 IIRC. some suspect Leukemia.

The 70s was an odd time for some sports cars - Porsche painted their 911s some really strange colors also-

I don't know a 246 but it was a Dino, was not some kind of kit car (sounded like a high-strung Ferrari, those had a 6 cyl engine?). It was headed down toward Kiawah, lots of swells with lots of buckos there, some kind of art show going on there today so maybe the owner and the missus were on a little ramble. I have seen Dinos here and there, the car show talked about in Boston usually had a couple there when I would go some years ago. The Dino has big fat flowing fenders, the 308 much more chiseled.

A few weeks ago I saw an Alpina 7 pass me one Sunday morning when I was riding my bike, which I guess is a new 7-series bimmer all tarted up? It was a real pretty ice blue color.

You saw a 246? On the road? Or a 308? I've heard that 308s were marketed as Dinos, not Ferraris, in Europe.
I've never actually seen a moving 246.
Mitch.
