A mate is a friend, whereas if you don't know the person you can say
chap, bloke, fella, etc
For example if I where to visit you, I'd say "Ow ya going mate" and you
would say " great buddy, how ya going, would ya like a cup of joe", I
would not say "How do you do chap"
