First off, this is not a god-forsaken part of the country. This part
of the country has been blessed with soil that is the most productive
in the world, along with adequate rains and a climate that is
considered temperate and liveable (at least compared to siberia) And
on top of that, we have some of the friendliest and most generous
people you will find anywhere. And, the most productive people in
the world live here, not on the east or west coast.
My first exposure to the USCG was the Goldenrod, tending buoys on the
Mississippi, and the miles and miles of navigation aids along the
length of THE River. Once in a while we would see the W.M. Black
dredging somewhere along THE River.
It was not until much later (in high school) that I figured out that
the USCG also operated on the coastal areas, not just on rivers and
the Great Lakes.
The Goldenrod and many other boats were built in Dubuque IA.

Actually, the Coast Guard IS over in this God-forsaken part of our great
country.
Anywhere you find a big river (Mississippi, Missouri, etc.) there is a Coast
Guard presence. Not normally any aircraft but they do have those strange
floating things. Amazing as it is, there are active duty bases (other than
recruiters) in Iowa.
