Only nasty if you don't like sharp tasting pickled things.
They can be replaced with seed pods of Nasturcium (sp) (we called
them nasty urchins as a child). Not capers, but similar, and they
add a sour, slightly bitter taste.
I like them, but I suppose not every one does....
