BCM applies to any engine with M1
the oil level indicators are accurate if they are working. check the
dipstick for confirmation. WITH M1, the indicator will commonly flicker on
and off if the oil level is just a bit low at sustained highway
speeds. This is due to the stickiness of the M1. It does not run back to
the crankcase like water (or dino oil) On 2 of my 603's the if the oil is
full the light won't come on at 70-75 mph. On the other 603, the oil
indicator circuit seems to have an intermittent ground.

Herr Doktor,
You will recall the BCM is checking Mobil 1 oil level
after the car has sat for at least 8 hours (cooled
down)...was that advice JUST for the OM617 or does it
also apply to the OM603?
How reliable, in general, is the oil level indicator
in the 87 300TD?
Thanks!
