That is pretty much how it is on all those gm fwd cars. The water pump
actually is also the tensioner for the timing belt.

Thought this of interest given recent posts about looking at GM vehicles.
My younger son is an apprentice mechanic. Last evening at dinner, he told me
what he had worked on yesterday. A
1999 Chevy Cavalier with about 65K miles on it. Leaking water pump on the 2.4
(or was that a 2.5?) 4 cylinder
engine.
Well guess what! It is a beast of a job. Sort of like changing a heater fan in
the 115.
The wizard engineers at GM made it run off of the timing chain. It is on the
back side of the engine near the
bottom under the exhaust manifold. So, in order to change a water pump, one
must dismantle half of the car. He says
that so long as they are in there, they will change out the sprockets,
tensioner and timing chain too, just to be
safe. Probably did not really need all that at 65K miles but the labour part is
expensive so why take chances. Lord
only knows what this will cost the poor owner. That car can't be worth much
more than the repairs will cost.
