Do you have the track visible in the Audacity pane? What version do you have?
On 1.3.5 ctrl-a works once I have clicked on the track, but then I can save and export too. After I hit the record button, the track becomes visible, then I can save/export. Another thought, do you only have one window up? Maybe the recorded window is hiding behind? Just shooting into the dark.
