The Ranger's tires are just worn, I think the tread is wearing away faster than 
it would on a newer tire. If I didn't need to replace tires on the car I'd 
probably do the Ranger now but it should be safe through the summer. I'll get 
'em in the fall.
A quick glance at Tirerack says I'll probably be spending over $100 a pop...

The current recommendation, from the people who make their living getting you 
to 
buy tires, is to replace 8 years after the week of manufacture.
