Larry, I keep mine on 24/7 but they can be wired to come on when the fan is
on.
Mine or not black lights, they are bluish purple.

One more question about the UV (Blacklights) - do they need to run all the
time or just when the H or AC are running?
I'm not looking to replace these systems anytime soon. ;-)
