The only ways I can think of to check the evap are to look at the service records (it's been replaced, or you'll probably have to replace it in the next few years), or have an A/C shop stick a freon sniffer in a cold air vent in the dash to see if it's already leaking.

If the system is low on freon, just assume it's going to be costly.
