What's the chance that Andrew has an early (123) type filter and since his car is an 85, it has the later OM603 type fuel filter? (and bolt!) I believe the later bolt would go in the filter and act as though it is stripped or cross threaded.

Andrew, do you still have the old filter to carefully compare thread size and pitch? The bolt hole in the older type 123 filter is larger than the OM603 type filter. If my memory serves, it also has a larger thread pitch, and the newer filter has a smaller pitch (finer thread)
