Yes, that is true. But if you get jarring shifts at redline, the transmission is ok. In that case you know the vacuum and/or control cable are not working properly. IF the transmission is toasted, you won't hurt anything either. You can also coax it to shift a bit earlier by letting off the pedal a little, somewhere around 4500 to 5000 rpm, maybe lower than 4500. My 240D does not have a tach.
