Yes, that is true. But if you get jarring shifts at redline, the
transmission is ok. In that case you know the vacuum and/or control
cable are not working properly. IF the transmission is toasted, you
won't hurt anything either. You can also coax it to shift a bit
earlier by letting off the pedal a little, somewhere around 4500 to
5000 rpm, maybe lower than 4500. My 240D does not have a tach.

Try unhooking the vacuum line to the trans. THat should make it
shift hard. If you see no change, then perhaps the trans is
toast. Check out the website for sun valley MB Dismantlers. They
have detailed adjustment instructions in a section of their website.
