The chain issue is wear, right?
How easy is it to check the cam timing?

Heck, most engines these days have both cam position sensors and crank position sensors. (firing the plugs off the crank sensor but knowing which cycle to fire on by the cam sensor) Seems like if the sensors are reasonably accurate, you could have the computer set off the SES light with a code for "timing chain wore out, replace soon".
