hi Tyler!

don't know what your off road experience is with XJs, but i can only guess you got this impression because you (as many people) just are innocently ignorant and don't know better. XJs are far better off road in stock form than any other station wagon i can think of, and far better than anything else in the price range they were sold in. modifications to significantly improve their off-road prowess are remarkably cheap, and even free, if you know what you're doing.

for example, remove the rear anti-sway bar (if it even had one) and get a set of disconnectable anti-sway bar links for the front, and you have axle articulation that you can't get at all in many other vehicles without many thousands of dollars of modification, if at all. about the only other thing with comparable axle droop cost several times what the XJ sold for new. hook the disco's back up at trails end, and it's possible to eat up many other cars in the corners, especially anything else dirt-worthy.

total cost: $200. it's the first thing anyone who actually knows anything about them and is planning on taking one into the dirt would do. admittedly, most of the kids that are jacking the things up don't know WTF they're doing and are doing it for looks. case in point; ever notice how many do you see that have 'upgraded' tires and/or wheels, but stock spares? ;-)

cheers!

They're impressively bad offroad in stock form, but can be made impressively good (at the expense of what little on road performance it once had) with extensive (and expensive) modification to the suspension and drivetrain- but what can't?

you, as many, may have misunderstood the XJ Cherokee; most off-roaders understand that any J**p is simply a platform on which to build the vehicle that best suits their interests and needs. our XJ has surprised many who didn't know what an XJ could do when properly prepared; and it does it with up to 4 passengers and their gear carried in air-conditioned comfort.

cheers!
