Could be one of the "California coupes" that were built.  These were standard 
SLs only they had a hard top only, no soft top frame or tonneau cover or area 
for the soft top storage.

It was a legitimate MB chassis, not a modification, but they weren't many of 
them made from what I know.  I looked at one in Orlando a few years ago and 
scoured it to see if the mounting points were there for the soft top frame, but 
I couldn't see them.

I would check this out in more detail in my SL book for John, but I'm currently 
in Florida (dammit) and don't have my stuff handy
