Say it costs $50 or $60 to have it fixed - maybe less - now think about
jacking the car up high enough to work on, dragging the jack stands across
the garage and putting them in place - hopefully both at the same height ;-^
then crawling under the car with a shoplight and a handfull of tools -
because you don't have a clue what will work to remove the old bushings (if
they're still there) and installing the new ones - which will undoubtedly be
difficult to squeeze into place with those big pipe pliers you have or else
those linemans sidecutters - and then finding neither will fit in the tight
space, Hmmm..,,, now, back to the toolbox scrounging around looking for
some kind of tool that might work before crawling back under the car -
Then, while laying n your back you start thinking: "Man! How can the
concrete be sooooo cold when it's 95F and 95% humidity and I'm sweating like
a pig?" (before the chills start) Keep this up for 3 or 4 hours -
Now, think about writing a check for $55 to Bud.... then driving your MB
home with a shift lever feeling nice and tight - just like it should be.
;-)
It's a no-brainer IMO, but I understand how you feel - like writing a check
is taking the easy way out - or paying for something *you* could do just
chaffs you wrong - just resolve yourself to the fact that *some* jobs are
better done by the people with the right equipment. Besides, Bud's gotta
buy groceries too.....
Take care --

I feel cheesy fixing this with my checkbook....but I may be at that point
in
my life. Time to call my buddy Bud at MB Motors.
I just placed an order with Rusty. I shall wait patiently hoping this wil
hold together.
I will get this car ready to sell to Kaleb.....I need something newer with
working HVAC.

Working in a hot garage while laying on your back under a car on jack
stands is never fun. Plus, the bushings must be pressed into the shift

with a screwdriver or similar tool. A lift is infinitly better.
Invaribly, it will be hard to reach the bushings and harder still to
press
them into place. There's not much room between the console and the
tranny -
add your hands and the linkage - well, you get the picture. Throw in
laying
on your back and 95F and you have a unpleasant situation. I have a 5K
BTU
Window AC that removes the humidity and gradually cools the 2 car garage
to
around 15-20F below outside Temp. My garage is insulated and has
sheetrock
walls & ceiling.
I've read the bushings can be reached if the shift trim panel is
removed
but didn;t think that was the case on a W123. You have a W114/115 IIRC -
I
suspect they are even tougher to reach.
The bushings are cheap <$5 IIRC. Maybe you can find a shop to
install
them for you.?
Good luck - LarryT

How big of an ordeal is it to replace the bushings? Remember...it never
gets
below 95 degrees in my garage this time of year...

Yea, the shifter is too sloppy, needs the bushings replaced. Once done,
will probalby go into park again.

I
usually use e-brake vice park on inclines, but this wasn't that big of
an
incline. Additionally, once in awhile I have to jiggle the shifter
when
in
park to get the neuteral safety switch to allow the car to start.
Are these two things related or just a co-inky-dink?
