I'm almost positive that the Liberty is the first stateside VM engine. But, as I said in the previous post, they appear to be well respected in Europe. Toyota, Rover and Jeep all using them in off road applications. But `Mericans hate Diesels. They don't last any more than 30,000 miles. Just ask anyone who's daddy owned a Diesel Caddy.
