Did the car first downshift or start to shift late, before you
noticed the loss in power? ON OM603s Auto trans, that is the first
sign of a plugged fuel filter. Fuel filters can plug rapidly. The
suggestions about air in fuel lines is also quite possible, but in my
experience, the first sign of that is longer cranking time on a cold start.
Check fuel flow and delivery volume after the filter.
If you recently fueled, then that is also an indication you may have
bad fuel. Smell the fuel. It may be gasoline or a gasoline
mixture. Both tank drivers and dissel car owners have been known to
put gasoline in the Dissel tank.
If you did not recently fuel, then it still can be a plugged filter.

On the way home today, about 3 miles from home, the '92 300D 2.5T lost power
and would only hold 60 mph in third gear, pedal to the floor, spewing grey
smoke. Came to a stop light, it idled smoothly and normally. Accelerating
when it turned green, the car had little power, started knocking, and
running rough at 1600rpm. I could get it up to about 2100-2200rpmmax. Let
off the fuel and let it shift to the next higher gear, and it would slowly
accelerate up again, same as before.
When I got home, I opened the hood, expecting to find the pressure line to
the ALDA, etc. off - but it all looks to be in place. With no load, rev'ing
the engine results in the shacking, missing, knocking, and lots of smoke
(grey) out the back. The smoke smells like raw Diesel.
