Finally ran the VIN in the EPC and data card shows ASD.  Guess I have a whole 
new system to learn!

ASR uses the wheel sensors from the ABS system. It eases up on the throttle and 
applies the brake to the spinning wheel if necessary. It did not appear on 
diesels until they used the electronically controlled injection pump. I'm 
thinking that was 1999? Maybe 1998? The only diesel Mercedes was selling in 
this country at the time was the E300.
