Mao is correct in some respects.  A "pig" is still the common method of
cleaning or checking the integrity of a pipeline, but is not commonly used to
separate product.  Nowadays they allow the product to mix between loads, the
term describing this beig "interface".  Based on characteristics like specific
gravity and viscosity they can calculate the interface between products, and
simply separate a given amount at the beginning/end of a transmission load.
One of my customers is Panhandle Eastern Pipeline.  They do primarily gas
transmission line stuff, but they have a couple of short product pipelines used
for petroleum products.  They use pigs for cleaning the lines as well as to
check them for leakage.  I've seen "smart pigs" that collect data as they
travel through the pipe.

I doubt that.  The way I understand it they use water to separate what they are
sending thru.
