I knew nothing about cover (hat, lid) etiquette until I started NROTC,
and unless someone else had mentored me I never would have learned.  My
memory is that my father focused on teaching us to speak correctly and
respectfully, to have good penmanship and to write well, and the evils
of collectivism.  Also he made sure we that we knew how to
hunt/kill/dress animals from squirrel up to deer.

Sometimes this is me.  Usually when there's NO place to put the hat!  I
prefer to take it off, but I won't put it just anywhere either.
