HAHA! I suspect the highly paid education administrators that do a lot of the lesson development are responsible for that. My daughter spent 2 years pursuing a education degree. She then spent a few weeks as a teaching assistant in a real school and decided she'd made a poor choice. The kids are completely undisciplined (and cannot be controlled), the lesson plans are prepared by aforementioned administrators and she decided to try something else. It was sad to see the spark of excitement extinguished - she had wanted to be a teacher for so long and it as crushed by a week of reality. But better then that later.

You're right about people judging others by what they say and write - like the old adage goes - "you don't get a second chance to make a 1st impression."

I was taught to read phonetically in SC then moved to Va when I was entering the 6th grade. Va had been 'experimenting' with a new reading tool - kids were taught to memorize words rather to than sound them out. This meant only words already known could be read properly and easily. It was agonizing to hear kids around me read out loud in class as they progressed through jr high school and then to high school and the osmosis never took affect for them. ;-\ They read like 2nd graders all the way to HS graduation. No wonder they hated reading. It's surprising any were able to learn anything else - each reading assignment was awful for them.

I have a pretty low opinion of the administrators who came up with this nonsense.

That's what our property tax money is used for - "experiments with the futures of a generation". How incredibly stoopid.

They tried the "spell it any way you want; It doesn't matter" crap on our kids 15-20 years ago in the "best in the state" schools. We told the kids it does matter, because people do judge you by the way you speak and write, especially if you want to have a good income. Both are good writers and speakers now.

That kind of writing may be ok to Alsharpton but the original posing on this list is proof to me that spelling does matter.

Not sure what the status is in the USA but I can tell you that in Canada in the past 15 years or more, spelling and grammer have not been considered important in the grade schools. My 21 year old son writes like that and he has a highschool diploma and a year of trade school college. He is an apprentice auto tech working in a shop. He works so many hours and then goes back to the college for a couple of months and then works more hours etc. He is working on his 3rd level hours now so he will have 2 more stints in college before he ultimately is a licences journeyman. They told them it was more important to get their ideas on paper than it was to do it correctly at the outset. I think they thought the students would become proficient by osmosis or something. In my son's case, it just did not happen because he was the sort of kid who did not let that sort of thing worry him. They told him it was Ok so he
did it that way.

Yeah, I was being rather rude there, but I just couldn't resist a cheap
shot. I suspect that poor spelling and grammar in many cases is the
result of sheer laziness, but it could also be due to something beyond a
person's control ala Wonko The Sane's clients...

Based on his post, I'd say he's already behind with a few payments.

I've checked a few of my emails after posting, and I know, I have no
right to point fingers or laugh. ;-)
