When I was attending my college of ed. I was amazed at the amount of
psychobabble that gushed from the faculty and grad students.  My department
chair kept pushing me to stay on after my undergrad degree and do some graduate
work.  I never really understood whether she was doing it because she felt I
could make a contribution or she just wanted to keep the flow of grad students
coming into the program (this was a very small department of 12-14 profs and
about twice as many grad students.)  While I admit it would have been
moderately entertaining, I needed to earn a "real" living.

Having been in the business world for some years prior to this, I found it
rather easy to manipulate and/or comply with the expected norms within my
department.  In other words, I figured out how to play the system early on..  I
probably could have done well had I stayed on, but in doing so, would have been
living at or near the poverty level.  With the cutbacks in funding that have
taken place in the last few years I would most likely have been on the street
right now, too.

As one with advanced degrees from a "college of Education" within a university,
I can say the quality of grad students getting advanced degrees in education
was appalling.  Aside from that, the indoctrination of new teachers consisted
of just that, indoctrination in edubabble, (the ability to speak educanese, so
as the parents will be intimidated and not question what is being taught, or
how) indoctrination about all the latest fads that don't work, and nothing
about critical thinking or methods that work.  Mcguffie's reader, even the Dick
and Jane books, and phonics and real math, along with real success and failure
teaches kids to be citizens.  That is something the "progressives" just don't
want.

When several of us caught a department chair plagiarizing grad student work,
the college and university circled the wagons to silence those of us who knew
about it, so as not to bring "embarrassment" to such a prestigious university.
THe plagiarizing department chair was moved to a Michigan university and
installed as a Dean.
