OK, that part I do understand. Seems a lot of effort to swap an engine though before finding out what the damage is on the one in there.
However, I do understand. I have a boat in that situation. Loud knock from the lower end and I am guessing it will need the crank and the whole works so I just bought a small block Chevy short block assembly used that should swap in quickly. Will see what the damage is in due course but likely going to be bad. Boat is a bit easier to swap however as once the doghouse is removed, it is pretty much wide open. He said he really preferred the swap and figured it'd be cheaper too.
