Just get a nice 300SDL, or a 350SDL with a new factory engine. It is probably more satisfactory overall, and probably cheaper, at least in the long run.

Now, I wonder about putting an OM603 in a 46-68 one ton truck, and set it up as a highway machine. Slightly lowered etc. Modern 6 speed manual truck trans...

That reminds me of a thought I had recently. When reading a Trading Post (those weekly papers with all kinds of stuff for sale) I spotted a 95 BMW 740 something. No eng or Trany - great body, wheels, tires for $250.

I thought, "Hmmm.... the 240D engine would be nice in that!!"

Then I thought, maybe that's a bit over the top.

Assuming the body is as good as they say, would this work or would I be better off putting a Ford V8 & trans from a recent junk yard find, or am I dreaming there too? Then I starte thining about the non-drivetrain problems with 7 Series Bimmers - their fancy suspension, controls, electronics, etc might make it a bear to maintain.

But it was a nice dream. Like the W140, I like the older 7 series. Big, powerful, luxurious, comfortable and capable of covering lots of miles with ease.
