Mercedes did have some paint problems in the late nineties. They where trying to use a more enviromentally paint on their cars and it just was not up to the job. Plenty of W210 owners not happy. Not sure about the other classes so much but I have seen plenty of pics of 210's with unacceptable corrosion within a couple of years use.

change their metal, thickness or coatings?  Why would they do that- they
sure got things right on the 124's.
