I think I've got a bad one. Several weeks ago I had my house power-washed,
and the fan in the screened-in back porch got wet and shorted out and
tripped the GFCI receptacle. Once I'd figured out the problem and removed
the fan, leaving the wires capped with wire nuts and tucked safely into the
box, the GFCI would stay reset. Days later it tripped again, but stayed
reset after I pushed the button. We were gone from the house for about 10
days, and it had tripped again while we were gone and won't stay reset. Now
I double checked the fan box to make sure the wires weren't shorting
anywhere, but the GFCI still won't stay reset. If I reset it several times
in a row, it will eventually stay reset for an hour or two.

So, do these things age and go bad? This one is probably about 15 years
old.

Very respectfully,

They sure do go bad. About $65 will replace the unit if you are an "electrician". Once they start trippin' its hard to rely on them. They just get more and more touchy. Good luck! A good electrical supply shop should have one on hand.
