There is no risk. You put in a piece of cardboard and drive. If the temps start to go to or over 90C, you get out, pull out the cardboard and cut some off. I'd cut off the top 1/4, but you can cut a circle out concentric with the fan hub. Then fans on these old Diesels are robust, you don't need to worry-wart about a piece of cardboard breaking the fan.

When that is done, get back in and drive. If it happens to overheat, repeat. You have wasted way more time and energy on this thread than it is worth. It is a simple thing. Been done LOTS of times before.

Theories are just that until tested.

The RISK is driving with an engine that never gets up to operating temp. THAT is risk!
Driving with WVO is a RISK. Buying BioD or Diesel Fuel is a RISK

mr/mrs/miss "Dieselhead",

you seem to misunderstand what my theories are, and be more willing to risk your equipment than i. (but thanks anyway, i guess; i make a living cleaning up after philosophy like that,...) :-^

   thanks for your,... help?

regards,
e

Why not just put a piece of cardboard in front of the radiator and see what happens? If your theories are true, not much will happen.

IF it makes enough difference to cause overheating, then cut 1/4 of the cardboard away. That would give creedance to the theories that there is too much heat going by the thermostat.

In every case where I have used cardboard, it makes the passenger compartment much warmer, and makes the engine operate at the proper temps with the heater on.

Too much thinking and not enough action. Do something.
