Why not just put a piece of cardboard in front of the radiator and see what happens? If your theories are true, not much will happen.
IF it makes enough difference to cause overheating, then cut 1/4 of the cardboard away. That would give creedance to the theories that there is too much heat going by the thermostat.
In every case where I have used cardboard, it makes the passenger compartment much warmer, and makes the engine operate at the proper temps with the heater on.
